cycle gear
Being an avid bicycle commuter, I’m always working on some garment or item for city cycling. This interest started about after working many late nights in San Francisco and having to brave the cold on my bike ride home. The coats that I originally had did not provide enough coverage, and I wanted to make things that perform better. I have designed, prototyped, and produced a number scarves, jackets,, vests, and bags.
Late night biking in SF is brisk! Thus the impetus for a gear type scarf was born. I wanted to create something that was effective, yet casual enough to wear with anything. City commuters wear everyday clothes so I wanted and everyday feel that perfomed well.
Most casual jackets are not designed for active lifestyles. They are generally sporty and made from performance materials. I wanted something that provided the correct coverage where needed: in the hood, at the sleeves and the back end. I chose a heavyweight ultrasoft twill for the outer shell and a lightweight inner lining. For temperature control I included a double zipper so it could easily be opened whilst riding. The entire jacket is lined inculding the pockets.
I learned how to assemble clothes in college as I took some classes from the fashion program. There I learned how garments were structured and the traditional process for pattern making and prototyping with muslin.
